The King of Swords rules from twenty degrees of Taurus to twenty of Gemini. Taurus is steady, grounded and immovable once decided; Gemini is quick, analytical and endlessly curious. The King joins the two: a brilliant mind that has settled into sound, dependable judgement. Where the Knight of this suit charges and the Page questions, the King decides, and his decisions hold because they rest on both intelligence and stability. Intellectual authority, truth and fair judgement, and the King is a role, not a sex. The judge, the lawyer, the doctor, the professor, the senior adviser whose opinion carries weight because it is reasoned and impartial. Clear, logical, ethical, principled, able to set feelings aside when a fair decision requires it. He values truth above popularity and expects others to do the same. Applied to circumstances instead of a person, it demands principled decisions and careful, documented reasoning: gather the facts, weigh them fairly, and commit to the conclusion. Rules applied unfairly, power abused, logic twisted to justify what is not just. Taurus's steadiness has become rigidity, and Gemini's cleverness has become cunning, the ability to win an argument regardless of whether the argument is true. The opposite failure appears as well: an inability to decide, poor judgement, or authority that has lost its grip on the facts. Or somebody so detached from feeling that their decisions, however logical on paper, cause real harm to real people. The card warns against abuse of power, and against letting cleverness replace wisdom.
