The Sun — upright meaning

Overview

The Sun rules its own card, the only classical planet to give a Major both its influence and its name. In astrology it is the self, vitality and the wish to be seen, and it is the one light in the sky that makes things visible instead of reflecting them. Nineteen reduces to ten and then to one, the Magician's number, so this arrival is also a beginning. After the uncertain night of the Moon comes full daylight: clarity, warmth, success and joy. This is widely regarded as the most positive card in the tarot, and upright it very rarely carries a hidden catch. The Sun means things are visible and things are going well. Confidence returns, energy returns, the truth is plain for everyone to see, and what you have been working toward succeeds. Vitality and good health belong to it as well, and so do childhood and simple happiness. It often points to children literally: a birth, a pregnancy, a child bringing joy, or your own inner child finally allowed to play. Where it describes someone, expect a radiant and generous person, the one whose warmth lifts a room. The Sun asks nothing complicated of you. It asks you to enjoy what is good, to let yourself be seen, and to share the light.

The Sun in love

Happiness, warmth and openness in love. A relationship full of joy and mutual celebration, where both people feel free to be themselves. Engagement, marriage, a new baby, or simply a period where being together is easy and fun. For somebody single, confidence that makes you genuinely attractive, and a good chance of meeting someone who matches it.

The Sun in career

Success, recognition and achievement. A project that goes well, praise that is deserved, a promotion or a result that everyone can see. Your talents are visible, and the card encourages you to step forward instead of hiding them.

The Sun and money

Prosperity, abundance, a comfortable and secure position. Money problems resolving, investments doing well, enough to enjoy life and share it with others. A good moment to be open about your finances with a partner or family.

The Sun: yes or no?

Yes, clearly and without reservation. One of the strongest yes cards in the deck.

As feelings

Happy, affectionate, delighted by you. Somebody who feels warm and completely at ease in your company, and does not try to hide it.

As actions

Celebrating, playing, shining. Sharing good news, going outside, being openly affectionate. Enjoying success without apologising for it, and making time for the people and things that make you laugh.

Advice

Enjoy it. Let yourself be happy without waiting for the other shoe to drop, and let people see you as you are. Confidence, generosity and simple pleasures are what this card recommends, and right now they are all within reach.

The Sun — reversed meaning

Overview

The sun behind a cloud. The joy and success are still there, only harder to feel: temporary setbacks, a mood of pessimism, a delay that makes good news seem further away than it is. The reversed Sun is rarely a truly negative card; it is more often a dimmer version of the upright one. Another reading is confidence tipping into arrogance, or to optimism that has lost touch with reality. Sometimes it describes an inner child who is being neglected, a person who has forgotten how to play or to enjoy anything without an agenda. And occasionally it means a success that has been delayed or is only partial, with the full result still to come.

The Sun reversed in love

A temporary dip, lack of enthusiasm, or one person too absorbed in their own concerns to share the warmth. Unrealistic expectations of how happy a relationship should feel all the time.

The Sun reversed in career

Success delayed, recognition that is slow to come, or overconfidence causing mistakes. Burnout from trying too hard to shine and forgetting to rest.

The Sun reversed and money

A temporary setback, or overspending because things felt good. Still fundamentally positive if you stay realistic.

The Sun reversed: yes or no?

Yes, but later or in a smaller form than hoped. The answer is still good; it is just not arriving at full strength yet.

As feelings

Downcast, a little flat, less enthusiastic than usual. Or somebody putting on a cheerful face over something that troubles them.

As actions

Holding back, doubting, losing enthusiasm. Showing off instead of shining. Forgetting to have fun.

Advice

Look for the light that is still there, and let it be enough for now. Take a break, do something purely for the pleasure of it, and keep your expectations realistic without letting them sink into gloom.
