Mars in Scorpio, starting the scorpion's thirty degrees. Mars was Scorpio's ruler long before Pluto was found, and in that sign its sharpness goes inward: not the open fight of Aries but the private wound that is turned over and over. Scorpio also falls in the middle of autumn in the northern year, when leaves drop and the light shortens, and the season suits this card exactly. Five breaks every suit's stability, and among the cups what breaks is the heart. Loss, grief and regret. Something has been lost, a relationship, an opportunity, a hope, a person, and the pain deserves to be felt. The card does not ask you to rush past it.
