Six of Pentacles — upright meaning

Overview

The Moon in Taurus, in the bull's central decan. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, and the reason is easy to feel: the Moon is the instinct to nurture, and Taurus, the bull, stands for abundance, comfort and plenty. Nurture placed where there is plenty to give becomes generosity at its most natural and unforced. Following the hardship of five, the six rebalances things by letting resources flow from where they are plentiful to where they are needed. Generosity, charity and giving and receiving. Money, time, help or kindness shared with someone in need, or received from somebody who has it to give. The card works in both directions: sometimes you are the giver, sometimes the one receiving, and both are honourable. It also speaks of fairness, of loans repaid, wages paid fairly, resources distributed justly. Its subtle question is about balance in the giving: whether help comes freely or with strings attached, and whether anybody involved is using generosity to hold power over somebody else.

Six of Pentacles in love

Generosity and mutual support in a relationship, both people giving and receiving fairly. Watch for imbalance: one person always giving, or giving that is used to create obligation. Healthy love flows both ways. Small generosities count here as much as grand ones: the meal cooked after a long day, the bill quietly paid, the time given when time is short.

Six of Pentacles in career

Fair pay, a raise, a bonus, a mentor willing to share knowledge or open doors. Help from a sponsor or an investor. Or you may be the one in a position to help somebody else up, which is worth doing well.

Six of Pentacles and money

Financial help received or given, a loan, a gift, a grant, charity. Debts repaid, fair exchange, resources shared wisely. Give what you can afford, and accept help without shame when you need it.

Six of Pentacles: yes or no?

Yes. Help and generosity are available, and the exchange is fair.

As feelings

Generous, caring, supportive. Somebody who wants to help you and to share what they have, and who is glad to be able to.

As actions

Giving, sharing, donating, lending, receiving gratefully. Mentoring, paying it forward, asking for support and taking it.

Advice

Give what you can and receive what you need. Keep the exchange fair and free of strings, and remember that being helped and helping are two halves of the same good thing.

Six of Pentacles — reversed meaning

Overview

Generosity with strings attached. The reversed Six often describes giving that creates debt, obligation or dependency: help offered to control, gifts that come with expectations, a benefactor who holds power over the person receiving. Or the imbalance runs the other way, somebody always giving and never receiving, and quietly resenting it. Debt belongs here as well, with financial dependence, or unfair distribution: unpaid wages, exploitation, a loan that became a trap. Sometimes it describes an inability to receive, pride that refuses help even when it is badly needed. The card asks for fairness in every exchange and honesty about the power that money and help can carry.

Six of Pentacles reversed in love

An imbalance in giving, one partner always providing and the other always receiving, or help used to create obligation and control. Money in the relationship carrying more weight than it should.

Six of Pentacles reversed in career

Unfair pay, exploitation, a mentor or boss who uses their position to control. Or refusing help you genuinely need because accepting it feels like weakness.

Six of Pentacles reversed and money

Debt, a loan with difficult terms, financial dependence on somebody who uses it for leverage. Read every agreement carefully and seek advice before signing.

Six of Pentacles reversed: yes or no?

No, not on these terms. The exchange is not fair, or it comes with strings.

As feelings

Indebted, resentful, unequal. Somebody who feels they give far more than they receive, or who feels controlled by what they owe.

As actions

Giving with conditions, keeping score, refusing help. Or recognising an unfair arrangement and stepping out of it.

Advice

Make every exchange fair. Give freely or not at all, receive without shame, and walk away from any arrangement where money is being used as a leash.
