The High Priestess

An answer waiting beneath the surface, not yet spoken.

At a glance

Upright

  • intuition
  • the unconscious
  • mystery
  • inner knowing

An answer that lives beneath the surface, known by intuition rather than reason. A time to listen inward before acting outward.

Reversed

  • secrets
  • disconnection
  • ignored intuition
  • confusion

A signal that inner knowing is being drowned out — by noise, by others' voices, or by refusing to hear what you already sense.

The High Priestess — upright meaning

Overview

The Moon rules her and two is her number, and both point the same way: there is a second thing here and it has not surfaced. The High Priestess is what you know before you can justify knowing it. Her territory is the inner one first: the subconscious, dreams worth writing down, intuition, and the kind of knowledge that is learned slowly and in private, including the esoteric. A dream that keeps returning belongs to her. So does the sense, awake, that the account you have been given is incomplete. She will not tell you what is behind the veil. She tells you there is one, which is a smaller claim and a more useful one.

The High Priestess in love

Something unspoken, usually on both sides. Deceit is possible and is not the default. Far more often two people are each waiting for the other to name a thing neither has words for yet. Attend to what you notice, not to what is being said.

The High Priestess in career

Information you do not have. A decision being taken elsewhere, a reorganisation nobody has announced, a colleague whose position is not what it appears. This card seldom recommends acting. It recommends watching, and it is usually right about that.

The High Priestess and money

Figures that do not add up, or a feeling that they do not. Read the small print and ask the second question. The Moon is not on its own a sign of fraud, though it does mean something has not been shown to you.

The High Priestess: yes or no?

Maybe, and here that is meant at its most literal. The answer exists and you cannot see it yet. Anybody offering you a confident yes or no about this is guessing at it.

As feelings

Depth held back. Somebody who feels a great deal and has decided not to display it, from self-protection or because they are still working out what it is. Silence in this card is seldom absence.

As actions

Observing. Waiting. Withholding a response on purpose. Keeping a confidence. Occasionally concealing, and whether that reads as discretion or as something less generous will depend on what else turned up alongside it in the reading.

Advice

Do not force it into the open. Keep a note of what surfaces, including in sleep, and give it time. Pressing for a plain answer now will get you a tidy one that is untrue. Meanwhile trust the unease enough to stop committing to anything that depends on the incomplete version.

The High Priestess — reversed meaning

Overview

Upright, the knowing happens quietly and gets respected. Reversed, it happens and gets overruled. You already know the thing, you have talked yourself out of it because knowing it is inconvenient, and each argument against it was individually reasonable. The outward version of the same failure is secrecy that has outlived its reason. Something withheld for a decent motive is still being withheld after the motive expired, and it has begun to cost more than disclosure would have.

The High Priestess reversed in love

Silence that has stopped protecting anybody. A thing unsaid so long it has become the thing. Or an instinct overridden because the plain explanation was easier to live with.

The High Priestess reversed in career

Being kept out of the room, or keeping yourself out of it. Information deliberately withheld, sometimes. Your own refusal to look at what the numbers have been saying for a month, at least as often.

The High Priestess reversed and money

Something not disclosed, or something you decided not to check. This reversal is the statement left unopened on the side.

The High Priestess reversed: yes or no?

No, in the particular sense that you are not positioned to judge. The obstacle is missing information and it will not clear itself.

As feelings

Cut off from their own feelings, or hiding them past any usefulness. Sometimes somebody asked to explain a feeling they do not yet understand, who withdrew instead of guessing.

As actions

Denying. Deflecting. Dismissing an instinct because it cannot be defended in a meeting. Withholding something the other person needed.

Advice

Say the unprovable thing out loud to one person you trust. Reversed, this card is almost invariably somebody who knows and will not admit that they know, and speaking it once is what breaks the refusal.
