The Fool tarot card

Major Arcana · 0

The Fool

A leap taken before you can see where you'll land.

At a glance

Upright

  • new beginnings
  • spontaneity
  • faith
  • innocence

A fresh start and a leap of faith. The Fool steps forward with open trust, unburdened by what came before, willing to begin without a map.

Reversed

  • recklessness
  • hesitation
  • naivety
  • bad timing

Either a leap taken carelessly, or one stalled by fear. The energy of beginning is present but out of balance — too rash, or held back too long.

The Fool — upright meaning

Overview

Zero, before the counting starts. The Fool is the moment before you know enough to be careful, and Uranus rules it, which is why it so seldom feels chosen. Something has broken open, or somebody has, and the old arrangement no longer holds. Two readings sit together here and neither cancels the other. One is innocence: openness, trust in what cannot be seen yet, the unafraid curiosity of someone who has not learned the drop exists. The other is a clearer-eyed courage, somebody who knows about the drop and has decided it is not the most important fact about the situation. Your question usually tells you which one is speaking.

The Fool in love

A beginning with no precedent: somebody who does not resemble the pattern, or a fresh start inside a relationship that had calcified. What it asks for is nerve, not certainty. Nobody gets guarantees here, and holding out for them is how this particular chance gets talked out of existence.

The Fool in career

A leap. The resignation, the pivot, the field you hold no credentials in. Uranus does not do gradual, so this is seldom a well-managed transition. It is usually the right move made at an inconvenient moment, which is exactly what makes it hard to defend to anyone sensible.

The Fool and money

Money spent on a possibility instead of a plan: the course, the equipment, the month of runway bought on purpose. Recklessness wears the same clothes, and the difference lies in whether you know what you are risking, not in whether you are risking it.

The Fool: yes or no?

Yes, with the card's own caveat attached. Yes to going, and no promise about where you land. The Fool answers the question you asked and not the one you were nervous about.

As feelings

Open, unguarded, trusting. The feeling of a beginning before experience has taught any caution about it, which can be real freedom, or a person who has not yet let the weight of the thing land on them, and will.

As actions

Starting. Saying yes before the details are worked out, leaving with no plan for the return, choosing the unfamiliar option deliberately. The action is always the first one, taken without the information that would have made it safe.

Advice

Go, and stop waiting to feel ready. That feeling is not coming and it is not what makes the difference anyway. But take the bag: this card travels light, not empty, and one or two things thought about in advance are the whole distance between an adventure and a mess.

The Fool — reversed meaning

Overview

The card upright is a leap; reversed, the leap has gone wrong before it happened. Most often this is caution that has outgrown its usefulness, standing at the edge rehearsing reasons while the window closes. Reasons accumulate easily and each one sounds responsible, which is what makes this failure so comfortable to live inside. Less often it is the mirror image: already airborne, having mistaken impulse for courage, with nothing packed.

The Fool reversed in love

Holding back from something genuinely available, or hurrying into something unexamined. The hasty version is louder. The hesitant one does more damage, because nothing appears to be happening while it does.

The Fool reversed in career

A chance not taken, followed by the story about why it was never realistic. Or its opposite, the resignation sent at midnight. The two look nothing alike and come from the same place.

The Fool reversed and money

Money risked without looking, or an opportunity declined out of caution that has stopped being proportionate. This reversal usually concerns the thinking instead of the sum.

The Fool reversed: yes or no?

No, or not like this. The reversal does not forbid the thing. It says the approach you are taking to it is the problem.

As feelings

Anxious about a beginning, or numb to how large one is. In both cases out of contact with the actual size of the decision.

As actions

Stalling. Researching a fourth time. Or bolting. Every one of these is a way of not being present for the choice.

Advice

Say the actual risk out loud in one sentence. If you cannot, you are not being careful; you are avoiding, and the caution is doing the avoiding on your behalf. If you can, it will often turn out to be survivable, and noticing that is generally what this card wanted.
