The Hermit — upright meaning

Overview

Withdrawal chosen, not suffered. The Hermit is what happens when the noise stops being useful and you step out of it deliberately, not to escape the question but because the answer will not arrive over the sound of everybody else's opinions. Virgo rules this card, and Virgo does not withdraw to rest. It withdraws to examine. The other half of the card is easy to miss and belongs in any honest reading of it. The lantern is held up, not held close. This is the teacher as much as the recluse: somebody far enough along to light the path for a person behind them. Read that way, the Hermit often means a mentor arriving, or a sign that what you worked out alone is now worth passing on.

The Hermit in love

Space asked for, and worth granting. This seldom marks the end of something. It marks one person needing quiet before they can know what they feel. If you are the one who wants the quiet, say so plainly, because unexplained distance gets read as rejection and that misunderstanding does the damage the distance would not have.

The Hermit in career

A season for study before the next move. The work is invisible and will not look like progress, which is this card's cost and the right one when the alternative is acting on something half thought through. It is equally the card of teaching: the expert consulted, the senior who trains instead of producing, the year given to a qualification. Where somebody more experienced is offering their time, take it.

The Hermit and money

Money slows down here, usually on purpose. This is the person who stops spending while they work out what they actually want, or takes a smaller income for a year in order to learn something. Not scarcity. A budget kept deliberately narrow so attention can go elsewhere.

The Hermit: yes or no?

Maybe, and the maybe is doing real work. This is not a refusal and not delay for its own sake. The answer depends on something you have not examined yet, and it can turn into a yes once you have.

As feelings

Somebody who needs to be alone with what they feel before they can say it. Seldom cold and seldom uninterested, but unwilling to put words to something half-formed, because saying it wrongly makes it harder to say rightly later. As a feeling, this card is depth that has not surfaced.

As actions

Stepping back. Cancelling the plan, taking the long walk, leaving the conversation in order to think. Reading instead of asking. The action is always a withdrawal and always chosen: not somebody left out, somebody who left.

Advice

Answer from what you find in the quiet, not from what is expected of you. And remember the lantern gets raised so it can be seen. Solitude in this card has a direction and an end, and if yours has neither then you are in the reversed version of it.

The Hermit — reversed meaning

Overview

The withdrawal has outlived its purpose. Upright, stepping back produced something; here the stepping back continues and the producing has stopped, which is a hard state to notice from inside because the days look identical. Sometimes the solitude was never chosen at all. Isolation arrived as a circumstance and got reframed afterwards as a preference, which is a kinder story and a harder one to leave.

The Hermit reversed in love

Distance nobody chose, or distance one person chose and never explained. Loneliness inside a relationship belongs here as squarely as loneliness outside one.

The Hermit reversed in career

Isolation mistaken for independence. Refusing help, keeping the work private, declining the conversation that would have saved a month. Often somebody who could ask and has decided that asking would cost them something.

The Hermit reversed and money

Either the withdrawal has gone on long enough that income stopped, or caution has hardened into hoarding. Both are a pause that was meant to be temporary becoming the arrangement.

The Hermit reversed: yes or no?

Maybe still, and a stalled one. The pause has stopped producing the understanding that would let the question resolve, so this waits on you now instead of on time.

As feelings

Loneliness in place of solitude: the same distance, chosen by nobody, returning nothing. Occasionally somebody alone long enough to have stopped believing company is available.

As actions

Hiding, dressed as thinking. Declining the invitation for the fourth time, leaving the message unanswered, calling it a need for space when re-entering has quietly become frightening.

Advice

Ask somebody. The lantern is raised so it can be seen, not only so he can see, and this reversal is nearly always someone who has forgotten the first half of that.
