Nine of Cups — upright meaning

Overview

Jupiter in Pisces, the fishes' middle decan. Before Neptune was discovered, Jupiter ruled Pisces, and the old rulership still shows: here the planet of abundance is at home in a sign of limitless water, generous without limit, giving without keeping count. The result is the card traditionally called the wish card. Nine brings each suit close to its fullest expression, and in water that fullness is contentment. Wishes fulfilled, satisfaction and emotional well-being. You have what you wanted, or something very close to it, and you are able to enjoy it. The card speaks of comfort, pleasure, good health, gratitude and a sense of having arrived. Readers have long treated it as the moment when a heartfelt wish comes true: the relationship, the home, the result, the recognition. There is also a note of self-satisfaction here, a pleasure that is personal more than shared, and the card's only gentle caution is to remember that contentment deepens when it is shared with others instead of admired alone.

Nine of Cups in love

Happiness and satisfaction in love, a wish coming true, a relationship that feels just right. For somebody single, contentment with your own life that makes you attractive, and good chances of meeting what you are hoping for. Enjoy it without waiting for something to go wrong. If you have been asking the cards whether a particular person feels the same, this is about as warm an answer as the deck gives.

Nine of Cups in career

Success, satisfaction, goals achieved. Recognition that feels deserved, a role you enjoy, a project that turned out as well as you hoped. Pause to take in the distance travelled before choosing the next target, because the satisfaction belongs to the prize and fades if you skip it. Asking for what you want is well starred too.

Nine of Cups and money

Comfort, abundance, financial goals met. Enjoying the rewards of your efforts, spending on pleasure without guilt, having enough to be generous. A good moment to buy the thing you have been saving for, and to give some away.

Nine of Cups: yes or no?

Yes. Your wish is likely to be granted.

As feelings

Content, happy, satisfied. Somebody who feels fulfilled with you and would not change a thing, and who may be a little proud of what you share.

As actions

Enjoying, celebrating, indulging. Treating yourself, counting blessings, relaxing into success, hosting a good dinner and letting yourself be the one who is looked after for once.

Advice

Enjoy what you have. Gratitude multiplies contentment, and sharing it multiplies it further. Make your wish clearly; this card says it has a good chance of coming true.

Nine of Cups — reversed meaning

Overview

The wish has not come true, or it has and it is not enough. Disappointment after hoping for something, or the hollow feeling of getting exactly what you wanted and finding that it does not satisfy. Jupiter's generosity in Pisces can also tip into excess here: overindulgence, greed, pleasure pursued past the point of enjoyment, comfort that has become complacency. Sometimes the reversal points to looking for happiness in the wrong place, in possessions, status or other people's approval, instead of in something that genuinely fulfils you. Or to a smugness that keeps others at arm's length. The card asks what you actually want, beneath what you thought you wanted, and whether the answer has changed since you first made the wish.

Nine of Cups reversed in love

Disappointment in love, unrealistic expectations, or a relationship that looks perfect and feels empty. Taking a partner for granted because the relationship became comfortable. Wanting the idea of a partner more than the partner.

Nine of Cups reversed in career

Success that does not satisfy, a goal reached that turned out to be the wrong goal, or complacency after achievement. Coasting on a past win while others overtake you.

Nine of Cups reversed and money

Overspending on pleasure, materialism, or wealth that has not brought the happiness it promised. Buying to lift a mood that keeps sinking back.

Nine of Cups reversed: yes or no?

No, or not in the form you expect. The wish may need rethinking.

As feelings

Dissatisfied, disappointed, restless. Somebody who has what they asked for and still senses a gap, and who is afraid to say so in case it sounds ungrateful.

As actions

Overindulging, complaining, chasing the next thing. Or stopping to reassess what you truly want, which is the better use of the moment.

Advice

Look beneath the wish. Ask what you were really hoping it would give you, and whether there is a more direct way to find that. Contentment is rarely at the bottom of a shopping bag.
