Eight of Cups — upright meaning

Overview

Saturn in Pisces, at the start of the fishes' thirty degrees. Saturn builds walls, keeps time and holds things in shape; Pisces is the ocean where every shape eventually dissolves. Set the planet of structure in the sign of dissolution and what you get is a structure quietly losing its hold on you: the life that was built carefully and no longer means what it did. Eight is movement after the stillness of seven's choices, and here the movement is away. Walking away. Leaving something that looks complete on the outside, a relationship, a career, a home, a way of life, because it has stopped feeling true on the inside. It is rarely dramatic. More often it is a slow recognition that you have outgrown something, followed by the harder decision to go without knowing exactly what comes next. The card has a spiritual edge, too: the search for deeper meaning, the journey inward, the need for solitude to work out what you are really looking for. There is sadness in it, and also courage. Staying would be easier, and the card says that easier is not the point.

Eight of Cups in love

Leaving a relationship that no longer fulfils you, or recognising that something important is missing even though nothing is obviously wrong. One partner needing time alone to find themselves is another reading. Either way it asks for honesty about what you feel, instead of staying out of habit.

Eight of Cups in career

Leaving a job or career path that has lost its meaning, even a successful one. Seeking work that aligns with your values. A sabbatical, a gap year, a change of direction that others may not understand. Make the plan as practical as you can, and go.

Eight of Cups and money

Walking away from a financial arrangement that no longer serves you, or accepting less money for more meaning. Letting go of an investment of money, time or feeling that is not returning anything.

Eight of Cups: yes or no?

Maybe, depending on your readiness to walk away from what you already have in order to find it.

As feelings

Disillusioned, restless, searching. Somebody sensing a gap that nothing here fills, and quietly preparing to leave, possibly without saying so yet.

As actions

Leaving, withdrawing, searching. Handing in notice, ending a relationship, taking a solitary trip, retreating to reflect.

Advice

If something no longer fulfils you, have the courage to go. Knowing exactly where you are heading is not required; you need to be honest that you cannot stay. Take what you have learned and leave the rest with gratitude.

Eight of Cups — reversed meaning

Overview

Afraid to leave. You know something is no longer right and you stay anyway, because the unknown feels more frightening than the familiar dissatisfaction. Saturn's walls hold here, and the Piscean pull toward something deeper is ignored or postponed. The reversed Eight often describes the long stretch of staying in what you have outgrown, telling yourself it is not so bad. Drifting belongs here as well: leaving and returning, leaving again, never quite committing to go or to stay. Or walking away from something too soon, abandoning a commitment at the first sign of difficulty when the problem could have been solved. Occasionally the reversal is a positive sign, a decision to stay and work on something after all, because on reflection it deserves the work. The key is to be honest about which one you are doing.

Eight of Cups reversed in love

Staying in an unfulfilling relationship out of fear, or going back and forth about leaving. Or deciding, after reflection, to stay and rebuild.

Eight of Cups reversed in career

Staying in a job you have outgrown because change is frightening, or quitting without a plan. Indecision about whether to go.

Eight of Cups reversed and money

Holding on to a financial situation that is not working, or walking away from a commitment too hastily.

Eight of Cups reversed: yes or no?

No, not as long as you remain stuck between staying and going. Decide first.

As feelings

Stuck, afraid, ambivalent. Somebody who wants to leave and cannot bring themselves to, or who keeps coming back.

As actions

Staying put, drifting, going back and forth. Avoiding the decision.

Advice

Be honest about why you are staying. If it is fear, face it. If it is genuine value, commit fully instead of keeping one foot out the door.
