Venus in Cancer, the first ten degrees of the crab. Venus is attraction, affection and the longing to be joined; Cancer is home, nurture and the instinct to protect those close to you. Put the planet of love into the sign of belonging and you get love that feels safe: not the dazzle of a first glance but the moment two people recognise that they can take care of each other. Two is the number of relationship itself, one meeting another, and among the cups that meeting is mutual. Partnership, attraction and union. Two people drawn together as equals, each offering something and each receiving. It is the card most associated with soulmates, new romance and commitment, and it is just as much about deep friendship, reconciliation after a quarrel, or a business partnership built on genuine respect. What defines it is reciprocity: the feeling is returned, the respect goes both ways, and neither person is performing. The mutual recognition of the upright card has turned into misunderstanding, a quarrel, or a quiet drifting apart. Cancer's protective instinct shows its other side here as defensiveness: hurt feelings guarded, withdrawal in place of conversation. Equally it may mean a breakup or a friendship ending, or a partnership, romantic or professional, whose terms are no longer fair.
