Seven of Wands — upright meaning

Overview

Mars in Leo, the last decan of the lion. Mars is courage and aggression; Leo is pride and heart. Put together, they make the fighter defending what is theirs, and doing it with more nerve than the odds would justify. The six won the contest; the seven is what happens next, when everyone who lost comes back to challenge the winner. Standing your ground. Defending a position, a belief, a boundary or an achievement against pressure from several directions at once. You hold the higher ground, which gives you an advantage, but you are outnumbered and the pressure is real. The card speaks of perseverance, conviction and the courage to keep saying no when yielding would be easier. It is often the card of the person who has done well and now has to protect it: the business defending market share, the expert challenged by newcomers, anyone asked to justify a success. Mars in Leo does not retreat easily, and here that stubbornness is mostly a strength.

Seven of Wands in love

Defending a relationship against outside pressure: disapproving family, rivals, gossip. Or holding a boundary with a partner who keeps pushing it. It asks whether the relationship is worth the fight, and if it is, to fight for it openly.

Seven of Wands in career

Competition from all sides, a position you have to defend, challenges to your authority or expertise. Standing up for your work, your team or your principles. Hold your ground if you are confident you are right. Prepare your evidence, keep your allies informed, and do not wait for the challenge to arrive before deciding what you will and will not give up.

Seven of Wands and money

Protecting what you have built: defending a price, holding an investment through pressure, resisting demands on your resources. Be firm, and check that you are defending value and not simply pride.

Seven of Wands: yes or no?

No, at least not easily. You can hold what you have, but gaining more will take a fight, and the cost may be higher than it looks.

As feelings

Defensive, determined, under pressure. Somebody who feels they constantly have to justify themselves or the relationship.

As actions

Defending, resisting, holding firm. Refusing to back down, arguing your case, setting a boundary and keeping it.

Advice

Stand your ground if what you are defending is worth it. Be clear about which challenges matter and which you can let pass, because fighting every one of them is how a defender gets worn down.

Seven of Wands — reversed meaning

Overview

Worn down. The challenges kept coming and the defence is failing, either because you are exhausted or because you have started to doubt the position was worth holding. Giving up, yielding, feeling overwhelmed by pressure from too many sides. Sometimes the reversal is healthy surrender: a fight that was never necessary finally dropped, a stubborn position abandoned because it was wrong. At other times it describes defensiveness out of proportion, treating every question as an attack and every suggestion as a threat. The courage of Mars in Leo has soured into fatigue in one case and something close to paranoia in the other, and the task is to tell which one you are looking at. Tiredness needs rest and help. Paranoia needs somebody you trust to tell you honestly whether the attack is real.

Seven of Wands reversed in love

Giving in to outside pressure, or being so defensive that a partner cannot get close. Tired of fighting for the relationship.

Seven of Wands reversed in career

Overwhelmed by competition, backing down from a position, burnout from constant defence. Or overreacting to reasonable criticism, and turning a colleague who wanted to help into one more opponent.

Seven of Wands reversed and money

Giving up a position under pressure, or losing ground to competitors.

Seven of Wands reversed: yes or no?

No. The position is hard to hold as things stand, and pushing harder is unlikely to change that.

As feelings

Exhausted, overwhelmed, defensive. Somebody who feels attacked from all sides and is running out of energy to respond.

As actions

Surrendering, retreating, overreacting. Giving up a position, or clinging to one out of pride.

Advice

Pick your battles. Let go of the positions you are holding only out of pride, and put what energy you have left into defending the few things that really matter to you.
